As fall moves ever closer and we get father away from Dolly the fishing is getting back to normal. We’ve been catching lots of trout but no reds until recently. Normally redfish are the most prolific fish for August but it’s been the trout this year.
Redfish have started showing up as of late and we limited out yesterday on Gulp. Most of the other guides here have been doing the same thing for the last three days.

Well the fishing guides of South Padre Island Outfitters have all been struggling since the rains of July 4 weekend. However we still managed to box quite a few fish even though the patterns changed. Now however we are starting to settle back into some fish catching patterns just in time for Dolly to show up. Most of the fish we’ve been catching have come from the ICW. The bag limit of trout with quite a few flounder thrown in has been the norm as of late. Redfish have all but disappeared; but I have started seeing some showing back up in the last few days.

Well Just as I predicted after the little slow down we’re back to catching lots of fish again. Trout showed back up on the color change and the reds are back on the gas well flats. I’m still catching them on the Gulp. Seems right now they are hiting most any color but white is best.
I’ve been flyfishing several times last week and the reds have finaly started to tail for me a little. We’ve been finding 10 to 12 pods early in the mornings around the mud dumps and heading out to the sand when the sun gets on up.

Well, it had to happen sooner or later. The fishing slowed down the last few days with the slower moving tides. We’re still catching fish but not limits as was the case last week and beyound. Either limits of trout or reds but not both. I did limit yesturday but it took a full day trip to do it. I expect it to pick back up after this weather blows by.

We’ve had some nice weather as of late and it’s made for some fantastic fishing. We’re still catching limits of trout and reds but the trout have all of a sudden grown up. Instead of just keepers, the fish are running from 18 to 22 inches with some nice 26 and 27’s thrown in. Top waters are working but we are still using the circle hook and 4″ Gulp for the most part.
For the last week we have been limiting out on trout and then going up to the three islands area and limiting on the reds. It just don’t get much better than this.

The fishing just keeps getting better what else can I say.
Tue. I took my friend Dr. Tony Flaig and his buddy Orlando out and we managed 8 trout and a limit of reds with several oversize released. On Wed. with John Thornson we did the same thing except we limited with our 10 trout had 8 reds of which we kept 6 the other two were oversized.
On Friday Gordan Smith and his son caught their limit of trout by 9:00 but then we didn’t catch a redfish till 1:00. But when they started biting we hammered them with 5 oversized we released and 2 we kept along with 4 other keepers in the slot, so they brought in 6 reds total all in about 1 hour and 45 minutes.

Now that the weather is warming up it’s beginning to look a lot like summer. Last week I had Lawrance Davis out for three 1/2 days along with his wife. They caught so many fish that they released them all on the third day. She caught most of the reds on cut bait using bally hoo. Lawrance caught most of the trout on Gulp. They seemed to like the pearl white in 4 ” the best but they did hit all the colors we threw at them.
The Roaney family came in on Sunday and did pretty much the same thing with 6 reds and 8 trout. They were treating their fishing guide Arin from Alaska to a little warmer fishing. He loved the fact he could site cast to redfish in the shallow clear waters of the gas wells. He said he would take some Gulp home with him and try them out on those coldwater fish. Go figure…….

It’s spring time and the fishing is still good and should continue to get better and better. We are still fishing the Berkly Gulp on a circle hook for the trout and catching our limits on them.
Last trip out for reds we caught 10 on gold spoons and some on the Gulp but most came on the spoons. The drumboat area seems to be holding most of the redfish.
Well the wind is still getting with it and will probobly stay that way now till June teenth. Our normal winds for this time of year are usually on the heavy side. However the redfish and trout don’t mind at all. Seems like the harder it blows the more they like to eat. So it makes for some good fishing even though the wind is howling.
This week has been really good fishing with Frank Cappali going out on Thursday and snagging 22 trout and 9 reds up to 29 1/2″. We caught the trout on Berkley Gulp in New Penny 4″ on a circle hook. The first 3 reds came on the same bait and the next 6 came on cut bait on the bottom.
It’s time to start fishing guys so lets get’er done.
